Scope and Contents

Two diaries kept by Julia Marie Huyshe (1812- 1890) describing many trips to and around India from 1855- 1864. The wife of Colonel Alfred Huyshe, Julia lived in India with her husband and had many children while in India. Because of unrest in the country and escalating mutinies, Julia took her children back to England but returns to India to be with her husband. In one trip from September 23- November 11, 1858, Julia travels from Calcutta to Peshawar. She gives great detail in describing the scenery and the ruins she encounters in towns as a result of the rebellion. She writes of her dismay over finding a former home and town, where most of her children were born, lying in utter ruins upon her arrival. The journal includes a pressed flower and an albumen photograph of Colonel Albert Huyshe.
