Scope and Contents
Letters from the archbishops of Canterbury and York, Anglican and Episcopal bishops and British prime minister, William Ewarts Gladstone chiefly concerning church business. Included among the correspondents are William E. Gladstone, John Henry Hobart, A. F. Winningham Ingram, Richard Channing Moore, Charles Manners Sutton, and Archibald Campbell Tait. Also included are etchings of Richard Channing Moore and of Beilby Porteus, Bishop of London; and the published volume "The House of Bishops" (The Churchman Company, 1907).
Acc. 2012.126 includes letters from Episcopal bishops, circa 1820s-1930s, as well as autographs of Episcopal bishops. Included among these correspondents are John Johns (Bishop of Virginia), Samuel Seabury (1801-1872), Alexander Mackay-Smith, Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright, William Ingraham Kip, Benjamin T. Onderdonk, Thomas Hubbard Vail, Carlton Chase, Leonidas Polk, Thomas Atkinson, and Henry C. Lay. Also included is a certificate from the Diocese of Fond du Lac authorizing a lay communicant (Newell Demerrit Stanley) to read a sermon.
