Conditions Governing Access

Collection is open to all researchers. Manuscript collections and archival records may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations, such as the Virginia Public Records Act (Code of Virginia. § 42.1-76-91); and the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (Code of Virginia § 2.2-3705.5). Confidential material may include, but is not limited to, educational, medical, and personnel records. If sensitive material is found in this collection, please contact a staff member immediately. Scope and Contents

Contains a diary, 1865-1866, of Mark H. Sullivan of New Bedford, MA. Entries include brief notes on his work, travel, and names of people and their addresses. He mentions boarding the "Brig John Hathaway," seeing whales, and stopping at destinations, such as the Virgin Islands. He writes about pricing cost of fabric/clothing and, on the 5th, notes he begins work for Davis, Wiley and Co. "Drilling Strippers Whole day." Other entries mention balancing, drilling and scouring and others note making boxes. A separate hand pens the last entry which indicates Sullivan died in St. Thomas of yellow fever. Quite a few pages are blank, while some others have been removed.
