Scope and Contents
Scrapbook created by William Henry Holloway while he served in the Army as part of the 36th Company, Coast Artillery from 1902-1904. Holloway participated in the United States military involvement in the Philippine insurrection where he served for one year. The scrapbook is comprised of mostly postcards and stock pictures of people and general scenes of the Philippines along with some original photographs of the United States Army while serving in the Philippines. Many of the photographs and postcards are loose within the book. Some of the photographs show under dressed natives. There are also pictures of men preparing for a cock fight with their chickens and one showing boys with caught dogs that they intended to eat. Included in the scrapbook is also a World War I Soldier's Record. In it Holloway records all of his war experience with the 36th (Philippine insurrection) and the 8th Regiment (which was absorbed into the 52nd Artillery Corps at the end of World War I). He lists bases, cities, major battles, and movements. He also lists his entire military experience in the front of the book, consisting of one year in the Philippines, 16 months in the World War in France. All total, Holloway indicates that he was a soldier for 19 years. 6 months was service in the Army Infantry and 18 1/2 years were served in the Coast Artillery Corps. Included with the scrapbook is a World War I service ribbon, a carte de viste of Holloway, two poems written by Holloway, and a Book of Popular Songs
