Biographical Information:
Spotswood Hunnicutt Jones (1925-2006) received her B.A. from Farmville Teacher's College (now Longwood University), and her M.A. from William & Mary. She was a teacher at Smithfield High School, Mathew Whaley School and James Blair High School in Williamsburg, and served as an adminstrator at the Gloucester County Day School (now Ware Academy). She was active in the APVA and a member of the Susan Constant Committee of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. Jones, with Francis Butler Simkins, Professor of History at Longwood College and Sidman P. Poole of the Univerity of Virginia co-authored a textbook which was adopted for the use of Virginia seventh grade students. The textbook was Virginia: History, Government, Geography. Scope and Contents
Papers, 1951-1976, of Spotswood Hunnicutt Jones concerning the state-commissioned elementary school textbook, "Virginia: History, Government, Geography" (New York: Scribner, 1957), which Hunnicutt Jones co-authored. Used in 7th-grade instruction, this textbook aided in the dissemination of the pro-Confederacy "Lost Cause" ideology.
Includes correspondence with Earl Gregg Swem, Francis Butler Simkins and others, as well as typescripts, revisions and galley proofs.
Addition 1997.28A consists of the correspondence of Jones with Ludwell Lee Montague; and papers relating to the history of Gloucester County, Virginia, especially the correspondence of the Gloucester County Bicentennial Celebration Committee and a manuscript by Jones about Harriotte Lee Taliaferro Montague.
