The West Virginia University School of Medicine began as two-year school in 1912. In 1960, the school opened University Hospital
and a four-year medical program. The school was known as the Medical Center until 1988, when it was renamed the Health Sciences
Center. Since then the school has undergone numerous changes. Ruby Memorial Hospital opened in 1988, replacing University
Hospital. In 1993, the Health Sciences Center was named for U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd. The center includes the School of
Medicine, the School of Dentistry, the School of Nursing, and the School of Pharmacy.
