Abstract

Chronological index created by donor to articles appearing in Morgantown, West Virginia (WV) newspapers for period 1917-52 regarding Scott's Run and neighboring areas (including Bertha, Osage, Chaplin, Pursglove, Liberty, Davis, Jere, Shriver, Bunker, and Cassville). Although there is no subject index, this 1130 page chronological index provides short abstractions of newspaper articles, including newspaper titles and their page numbers. Subjects of articles include: coal mining news of every kind (accidents, disasters, employment, unions, operators, specific mines, strikes, etc.); Depression related news (including Arthurdale, Eleanor Roosevelt's visits; miners relief, etc.); prohibition (including arrests for possession of liquor or moonshine, etc.); University High School (mostly football news); and incidental news (including accident and crime reports, and marriages, births, and deaths). The creator of the index doesn't claim it to be comprehensive. Format consists of photocopied pages of handwritten citations. This collection also includes a similarly constructed index for Pt. Pleasant, WV newspapers for period 9/1952-1956 covering Hannan High School football.
