Abstract
Letter regarding John Brown's raid. Autograph Letter Signed, "Geo. Washington," [presumed to be a descendent of US President
George Washington, who lived from 1732 to 1799] 3p. quarto, Alexandria, November 2, 1859. It reads in part: "What think you
of the Harper's Ferry tragedy? You will see from the papers sent, that Brown has been convicted - he should die a dog's death,
the one prescribed by the law is much too good & respectable for him. This man in my opinion is certainly deranged upon this
particular subject - when interrogated about the enormity of his deeds, His answer 'I am an instrument in the hands of providence'
& it is the best service man can render under God. I learn though friends from the spot, the excitement is very great & apprehensions
are entertained the prisoners, will be rescued from the hands of the law & hung at once by the citizens of the place..."
