Abstract
Typescript copy of the diary of an unnamed Confederate sympathizer in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, during the Civil War. This ten-page document was copied from an April 1925 article in the Shepherdstown Register and contains brief entries that document the divided loyalties and violence in Shepherdstown during the war. Entries begin in May 1862 but most of the diary covers 1864 and 1865. Topics include troop movements in the area and the impact on the land and people; civilian activities in support of the armies; civilian relations and issues of loyalty; civilian and solder interactions; Confederate raids; African American soldiers; the death of Confederate scout Redmond Burke; the funeral of Confederate scout Andrew Leopold; civilian reaction to the end of the war; and the arrest of Henry Kyd Douglas for wearing Confederate gray once the war had ended.
