Abstract
John S.S. Herr was lieutenant of Company K, 6th West Virginia Infantry, and Company F, 1st West Virginia Light Artillery, during the Civil War. Chiefly contains military orders and records related to Herr's service and these two regiments from October 1861 to September 1863. Items include Herr's certificates of promotion and general and special orders, circulars, and other official documents related to troop movements, detachments, unit equipment, supplies, and regulations, particularly at Camp Hopkins in North Mountain, Virginia. Several documents note Herr's arrest, court-martial, and resignation. Also of note are letters to Herr in February 1863 regarding the 1861 arrest and release of runaway slaves.

Biographical / Historical

John S.S. Herr served in Company K, 6th West Virginia Infantry, and Company F, 1st West Virginia Light Artillery, during the Civil War. He was appointed sergeant major of the 6th West Virginia Infantry in October 1861 and promoted to first lieutenant in March 1862. Herr was detached for service in Company F of the 1st West Virginia Light Artillery in July 1862, but returned to the 6th West Virginia in early 1863. Herr was charged in July 1863 with neglect of duty and disobedience of orders. He was arrested and assigned a date for court-martial. In September 1863, Herr resigned and was honorably discharged.
