Abstract
In the spring of 1985, West Virginia University (WVU) student Diana Lee Murrell produced a series of eight women's radio shows as part of her professional project at the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism. The show aired weekly on WWVU-FM, which is owned by WVU. This collection contains the eight recordings and a final report written by Murrell on the production and implementation of the show.

Biographical / Historical

In the spring of 1985, West Virginia University (WVU) student Diana Lee Murrell produced a series of eight women's radio show segments as part of her professional project at the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism. The show aired weekly on WWVU-FM, which is owned by WVU. As of 2025 April, WWVU-FM is still in operation.

Scope and Contents

Murrell's radio project consisted of two shows. The first was the Focus on Women which were interviews with various women, including Carroll Wilkinson, Helen Craig Riley, Julie Miles, Pamela K. Brown, Dina Silver, Rosemary Srebalus, and Ruth Siegel. The second was the Women's News Updates which was local, state, and national news stories relevant to women's lives in West Virginia.

Local Morgantown, West Virginia news stories for the Women's News Updates include the Susan B. Anthony Award dinner hosted by the West Virginia National Organization for Women (NOW), Barbara Ferraro and Patricia Hussey's speech about Catholicism and being pro-choice, a meeting of the WVU Society of Women in Agriculture, the Women's Project at the Women's Information Center, WVU Journalism Week, protests against former President Ronald Reagan's bombing of Libya, and a sexual assault prevention forum.

National news stories include pay equity raises in Wisconsin, Iowa, and the University of Rhode Island; the Dalkon Shiel IUD injury claims; the Girls Club of America's National Science Foundation (NSF) grant; Hazel Brannon Smith; the March for Women's Lives in Washington, D.C.; the Navajo-Hopi Settlement Act; Pamela Golden's discrimination and sexual harassment lawsuit against Duluth television station; and the Philadelphia Women Organized Against Rape.

Murrell produced a report, Women's Radio News and Interviews: Producing Weekly Shows as part of her final project in 1986.
