Custodial History
The correspondence in this collection, written by Mildred Jane Chandler Coleman, was acquired by Nancy Shelton during her tenure with the Longwood University Department of Alumni Relations. It is unknown when the collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.
Biographical / Historical
Mildred Jane Chandler of Guinea in Caroline County, Virginia was born in 1870 to William Samuel and Ann Elizabeth Chandler. After receiving an education from a private school run by her mother, Chandler attended State Female Normal School in Farmville, Virginia, graduating in 1894. After graduation, she returned to Caroline County where she taught in a one-room school for 12 years. In 1904 she Chandler married E.M. Carpenter who was a foreman overseeing the expansion of the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to South Carolina where E.M. Carpenter was unfortunately shot and killed by one of his employees. Following her husband's death, she returned to Caroline County, where she once again taught school. In 1910, she married J.T. Coleman, a farmer from Caroline County. In 1935, Mildred Coleman and her husband were murdered and robbed by two men hired to help on their farm. She is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Scope and Contents
The correspondence in this collection, which dates from 1922, was written by Mildred Jane Chandler Coleman to her classmates from the State Female Normal School class of 1894.
