Historical Note

The Nuremberg Chronicle is an encyclopedia first published in 1493 in Nuremberg, documenting biblical history and the history of Christian figures. It was originally written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel, and woodcut illustrations were created in Michael Wolgemut's workshop for the printing. Wolgemut's stepson, Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, was involved in the illustration. The book was also translated into German by Georg Alt, and is the first printed book to include illustrations and text.

Scope and Content

This collection contains leaflet 215 of the Nuremberg Chronicle . The book was originally published in 1493, but the date of the leaf is unknown. The text is written in Latin and contains painted illustrations related to the text. The front of the page details the life of Thomas Aquinas; the back page details the lives of Pope Gregory X, Pope Innocent V, and Pope Adrian V. The front page contains illustrations of Thomas Aquinas, King Charles, two flagellants, and King Phillip; the back contains illustrations of Pope Gregory X, Pope Innocent V, Pope Adrian , and Rudolf I holding a book and cross scepter, flocked by popes and cardinals.
