Biographical Note

Henry St. George Tucker III was born in Winchester, Virginia on April 5, 1853. He graduated from Washington and Lee Univrsity in 1876. Tucker, a Democrat, was elected to the 51st Congress of the United States from Virginia in 1889. He served for three consecutive terms until 1897. He served as a professor of law at Washington and Lee from 1897-1902 and as dean of the law school from 1899-1902. He died in Lexington on July 23, 1932.

Content Description

This collection consists of one bound manuscript volume which contains a list of all white voters of the 10th District of Virginia compiled and revised by U.S. Representative from Virginia Henry St. George Tucker, III and dated February 1, 1889. There are later undated revisions made to the original list.

The list includes the names of white males of voting age with a U. S. Post Office address in the Virginia counties of Allegheny, Appomattox, Augusta, Bath, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Highland, Nelson, Amherst, Buckingham, and Rockbridge which comprised the state's 10th District. It is noted in the volume that there were 317 post offices in the district. In some cases, Tucker includes notes such as voters' occupations.
