Biographical Information

Arthur W. Arundel, born January 21, 1928, was a former United States Marine Corps combat officer, broadcast journalist and the first Board Chairman of George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. Mr. Arundel was born in Washington D.C. and graduated from Harvard University in 1951. He served as a combat officer in the Korean War and as a paramilitary officer for the CIA in Vietnam. After his time with the Marines, Mr. Arundel pursued broadcast journalism, working for news outlets such as CBS News and United Press International. He also founded Arundel Communications and was heavily involved with WAVA radio station. During his time as the Board Chairman at George Mason, Mr. Arundel was instrumental in facilitating the expansion of the college. Mr. Arundel passed way in 2011.

Scope and Content

The Arthur Arundel papers collection includes correspondence, proposals, status reports and other documents documenting Arthur Arundel's service on the George Mason University Advisory Board and the Board of Visitors. Documents in this collection cover a period from 1964-1996 and include information on Mr. Arundel's involvement with the university during and after his time on the board.

Mr. Arudnel also served as the chairman for the dedication of the Fairfax campus in 1964 and there is some documentation on this activity.

There is also a student directory from 1964-1965 and a brochure from the early 1960s. Please note that all of the documents are photocopies of the originals held by Arthur Arundel.
