Bio/Historical Note
Julia Lewis Martin (née Smith) was the daughter of Julia and Reid Smith of Lexington, Virginia. She graduated from Madison College in 1948 with a degree in business education. Martin served as the senior class president and participated in the Baptist Student Union, Business Club, Choral Club, Theta Sigma Upsilon, Glee Club, and the Granddaughter's Club.
Scope and Content
The Julia Smith Martin Papers, 1945-1948, consists of two folders of paper memorabilia collected during Martin's time as a student at Madison College, between 1945 and her graduation in 1948. The memorabilia consists primarily of event programs, including commencement exercises (1945 and 1948), choral events, orchestral performances, a Virginia Federation of Music Clubs luncheon, and May Day 1948. A small Madison College paper pennant is included. Also included are original and scanned copies of disciplinary citations Martin incurred. Martin received the citations for signing out late, hosting a noisy party during study hours, and eating before the blessing. The collection also contains an honor pledge card, a student deposit fund card, a luggage tag, and an invitation from Louise Woodward addressed to Walter Yancey to attend a fall dance. Woodward was in the same graduating class as Martin.
Arrangement
The collection is arranged topically in two folders. Items are further arranged chronologically when possible.
