Acquisition Information

Special Collections staff discovered this material in January 2015 tucked into the back of one of the duplicate copies of the Madison College Bulletin of Information. Because the items all contained information identifying Naomi Thacker as the creator, a collection was established out of the materials.


Bio/Historical Note

Naomi Virginia Thacker Lockard (1913-2006) was born in Rockingham County, Virginia to Albert Myers Thacker and Lessie Virginia Showalter Thacker. She graduated from Bridgewater (Va.) High School in 1936 and was the class salutatorian. Lockard enrolled in Madison College as a transfer student from Shenandoah College. At Madison, she was a member of the Sesame Club, an organization aimed at bringing day students "into closer union with the girls who board at college." Lockard graduated in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree and went on to complete a dietetic internship at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. She married Lonzo Lockard and together they had three children.

Lockard retired in 1979 after 30 years of service at the Veterans Administration in Martinsburg, West Virginia. She was active in professional and community organizations including the American Dietetic Association, Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 896, and American Legion Post 14 Auxiliary.

Scope and Content

The Naomi Thacker Lockard Papers, 1941-1943, contain Lockard's course registration materials from her time as a student at Madison College. The materials include fall, winter, and spring program cards that show class schedules for Monday through Saturday. Also included are class registration cards, receipts for class fees, and instructions for curriculum advisors regarding registration. Also included in this collection is a copy of the February 1941 Bulletin of Information that includes the annual catalog for 1940-1941 and announcements for 1941-1942. "Naomi Thacker" is inscribed on the front cover.
