Biographical / Historical

Norborne Berkeley was born in Danville, Va. and graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in 1916. During the same year, he joined the New York law firm of Cravath & Henderson. In the war, he was a captain of field artillery in the Army and was named a Major after serving in France. In 1919 he began his career of forty-five years at Bethelem Steel Company where he became vice-president and director. He retired in 1961. Scope and Contents

The Norborne Berkeley papers consist of 8 document boxes, 4 cubic feet, of mostly family correspondence during World War I. Letters between Norborne (Bunny) Berkeley and his wife Dorothy (Dot) Berkeley contain details about World War I and the hardships of the war especially being forced to be apart. Also included are correspondence and materials related to the American Expeditionary Forces, and the University of Virginia, such as the Alumni Association, the Overseas Alumni, the European Division, the V-Club, and Delta Kappa Epsilon. Miscellaneous items include an overseas map of enemy first postions, a war mileage voucher, receipts, Confederate money, and Dolly Berkeley's hair.

Berkeley; his brothers, Harrison (Harry)Berkeley, and Landon Berkelely; his sister, Ann Churchill (Caesar); his children Berkeley and Dolly; and in-laws from 1918 to 1961. The letters between Berkeley and his wife in 1918-1919 describe events during World War I and the difficulties of being separated from each other.
