Biographical Note

Henry M. Fowlkes was a resident of Chesterfield and Montgomery counties in Virginia. He wrote two letters from Winter Park, Chesterfield County, on October 6, 1863, to his young daughters. The first letter he wrote, was regarding the passing of his recent wife. His wife had died recently after childbirth with their youngest daughter Janie. In addition the second letter is to his daughters from Greenhead, Montgomery County, in 1865, before what he believed would be his death. Henry Fowlkes actually lived a another 22 years, remarried, and died in 1887.

Scope and Content

The collection Henry M. Fowlkes Letters includes two letters to his children in 1863 and 1865 during the American Civil War. In the first letter, he describes his life with and the death of his recently deceased wife. The additional letter describes how he believed he was dying of consumption. A full transcription is available of both letters.
