Biographical / Historical

Janet M. Scagnelli is an animator, animation cell restorist and the owner of the Chelsea Animation Co.She began her career in animation at the age of thirteen working with her sister in the production of Terrytoon shorts. She graduated from SUNY at Binghamton in 1974 with a BA in Art History. For seven years she worked in animation management for many of the full service animation companies in New York City. Her work also included a staff position on the production of the first adult animated feature, Fritz the Cat. In 1981, she founded her own business, Chelsea Animation Co. in New York City's Chelsea district. The company evolved into a dual focused animation studio. One portion of the business has continued Scagnelli's emphasis on the production of animated features and commercials. The second side involves the restoration of vintage animation cels. She moved her studio to Richmond in 1991. Chelsea Animation Co. provides a variety of predominantly hand-rendered animation services to both production companies and independent clients. Nickelodeon selected Scagnelli to color design its animated television show Doug. She color designed the fantasy comic book Elfquest. Her studio produced a twelve minute animated educational film about the Statue of Liberty for the Statue of Liberty Centennial Commission. Other commercial work includes credits for Hallmark Cards, Campbell Soup, the Trix Rabbit and MTV's Liquid Television and Ren and Stimpy. Scagnelli is one of a handful of artists in the country who have developed restoration techniques and services to conserve and restore this art form - working closely with fine art conservationists throughout the country to develop restoration techniques which place an emphasis on retaining the integrity and artistic values of the original work. She has restored hundreds of classic cels for collectors throughout the world. In 1993 she began working on a documentary focusing on the history of animated television commercials.
