Scope and Contents

Materials Collected by Mrs. Louise Morris, genealogist and authority on local history. The collection includes a notebook kept by J. H. Wherry, a student at Jefferson College, Pa., in 1859; a genealogy of the DeVaul, Haun, [F]ast families of Marion and Monongalia counties, 1817-1957; an essay on "Immigration" by George Whitham, 1896, favoring immigration restriction because of the increased number coming from " the Latin races of southeastern Europe;" land surveys from dead books, 1827-1933, mostly in Monongalia County: and a scrapbook of pictures, early 20th century, including WVU buildings (Martin Hall, the old library, The Drill Field area), Raven Rocks at Uffington, the Cheat River and Cooper's Rocks, Cascades on Deckers Creek, Oak Park near Masontown, White Rocks in Marion County in 1912, and numerous unidentified people.

Microfilm includes (1) "An Old Timer Remembers, Early Days of Green County, Pa., [1850-1925];" (2) "People Living in the Neighborhood of the Fairview Church, Clinton District of Monongalia Co., W. Va., from June 1845 to 1900," including Halls, Baileys, Austins, Millers, Shuttlesworths, Lanhams, Joliffe's and related families; (3) "The History of Halleck Community, Monongalia County, W. Va., [1830-1917]," by Elijah MoRae; notes on the genealogy of the Morris, Baker, Le V[e]lle, Bunner, Keister-Jenkins, Chadwick, Lewellen families; and (5) "Roster of the 1st W. Va. Vol. Infantry, Spanish-American War, 1898," (including also certain W. Va. Civil War companies: 1st W. Va. Calvary, Company A; 3rd W. Va. Cavalry, Companies C and D; 6th W. Va., Calvary, Company A; 7th W. Va., Infantry, Company E; 14th W. Va. Infantry, Companies C and [I]; 17th W. Va. Infantry, Company E; 1st W. Va. Lt. Arty., Battery F; Monongalians serving in other organizations and Monongalians serving the Confederacy)

There is history and genealogy of Helmick, Ryan, and McNemar families.

Xerox copy of a newspaper clipping scrapbook for the period 1910-1940 includes articles on P.J Crogan, P.G. Cutlip, S. O. Davis, Solomon Day, the Hacker family, Hacker's Valley, Joseph H. Huldeman, newspaper columns by L.V. Keck; Simon Kenton, Kern's Fort (Revolutionary War), Old Preston County Courthouse, Rawley Lucas, Mrs. Caroline B. Rinehart, Robinson's Run, old water mills, and William M. and Mary Jane Wilson.
