Historical Information
Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, Loudoun County was a rural area comprised mostly of farming communities. During this time period, children completed chores on their farms, attended one-room schoolhouses, and participated in activities such as the 4-H Club and Girl Scouts of America.
The Student Oral History Collection is comprised of a series of interviews conducted by local middle schoolers during 1981 with Loudoun residents to better understand day-to-day lifestyles of the early twentieth century.
Scope and Content
The Student Oral History Collection is a series of interviews conducted during the Spring of 1981 with Loudoun residents Milton Hoffman (1915-1994), Blanche Hoffman (1898-1983), Mrs. Dee Jacobus, Ethel Cole Leffingwell (1898-1998), Evelyn Litton (1904-1999), and J. Dabney Simpson (ca. 1904-unk). It consists of both handwritten and interviews and transcripts, and should be handled carefully.
The interviews are concerned with many aspects of life in Loudoun County during the first half of the twentieth century, including attending a one-room schoolhouse, prices of domestic items, living in a log cabin, riding horseback to school, and living conditions in local hotels during the Depression.
The interviews are the only items in this collection.
