Scope and Content
This collection contains an electrostatic copy of the appointment of Philip St. George Cocke as aide-de-camp to the Commander in Chief with the rank of Colonel of Cavalry, signed by Governor John B. Floyd , February 22, 1850, and the seven page manuscript of a poem by Margaret Read Cabell entitled, "Stanzas addressed to Philip St. George Cocke Esq on entering his newly-erected mansion at Belmead, Powhatan, June 1848." Margaret Read (Venable) Cabell was the wife of Nicholas Cabell , Jr. and mother of Nathaniel Francis Cabell . Also present is a typescript of Mrs. Cabell's poem by John Page Elliott .
