Scope and Content
This accession consists of six items, 1897-1908, pertaining to John Warwick Daniel of Lynchburg, Virginia , and a telegram, November 14, 1884, addressed to Robert D. Yancey , Lynchburg, Virginia , from Page McCarty , Washington, D.C. The five letters and telegram to Daniel, who served as a U.S. Senator from 1887 to 1910, are primarily requests for assistance. Included are a request to sponsor a bill to increase the pension of a parent whose son died after eating poisoned rations issued by the government; a request for assistance in obtaining the position of secretary and disbursing officer to the Commission to attend the international exhibit in Paris in 1900; a request to speak at a banquet; a thank-you letter; and a letter concerning a controversy over the construction of the Library of Congress building. Correspondents include U.S. Senator Daniel Wolsey Voorhees , A. F. Howard , Hunter N. Kern , Dr. Samuel L. Hammon , Alfred de Zerega , and V. A. Witcher .
