Scope and Content
This legal document is a March 19, 1793 slave hire agreement between Henry Washington and Elliot Monroe , both of Westmoreland County . It is for the hire of five of Washington's Negro carpenters (slaves) to square timber in White Oak Swamp for use in the city of Washington . According to one of the endorsements on the reverse, this copy belonged to Monroe. A transcript has been provided for researchers.
