Scope and Content
This collection consists of a four page (with an attached note) autograph letter, September 15, 1865, from Edward Thornton Tayloe (1803-1876) to the Governor of Virginia , Francis Harrison Pierpont , regarding the U.S. Constitution and qualifications for election to Congress. Also attached is a news clipping dated October 3, [1865], where Tayloe has withdrawn his candidacy in the race for the 1st congressional District seat due to the requirement of the Test Oath by Congress.
