Scope and Content Information
This collection consists of the business and financial papers of H.B. Wayland of Heards, Albemarle County, Virginia, a commercial fruit grower and manufacturer of slack cooperage stock, ca. 500 items (1 Hollinger box), ca. 1905-1940, including freight bills from the Southern Railway Company, accounts, and business correspondence. The freight bills, ca. 1915, were removed from a letter box and retained in their alphabetical arrangement. The accounts are also arranged alphabetically by the name of the business. The papers provide information on the operation of his apple orchards and cooperage, especially the shipment of his products, including the famous local apple, the Albemarle Pippin. For a discussion about the name "Albemarle Pippin" see the article by Atcheson L. Hench in The Magazine of Albemarle County History, Volume 14, pages 21-25. The business correspondence, 1905-1935, mentions the following: a poor apple season (1911 Oct 27); the growing and sales of the "Albemarle Pippin" (1905 Mar 16; 1912 Oct 7; 1914 Nov 5; 1919 Sep 8: 1923 May 1; 1924 Jun 14; and 1928 July 30; Aug 4 & 8); the beginning of the Albemarle Manufacturing Company (1905 Jun 14); the packaging of apples (1929 May 8, 10); and the Apple Grading & Marking Law (1930 Jan 23). The remainder of the correspondence pertains to orders for apples, barrels, and staves, the purchase of equipment or repairs, and personal purchases.
