Scope and Content Information

This is a three-page financial statement, January 6 - July 12, 1879, detailing the financial settlement of the "Birdwood" estate, Charlottesville, Virginia, involving the Bankhead and Gilchrist families. The first page is entitled "Statement of costs to be borne by all parties" and includes fees paid to W[ ] & P[erkins] for dividing the estate, renting part of the estate, writing the deed, and making settlements; to the clerk for recording the deed and clearing the title; and, to the Chronicle for the advertisement to rent. The taxes on "Birdwood" for the year 1879 are also listed. The second page is entitled "Statement showing whole fund & share of each party" and lists the amount received for sale, cash payment on the estate, and the final payment on the estate, and gives the amount divided between Mrs. Bankhead, Mrs. P. P. Gilchrist, Mrs. J. H. Gilchrist, and Lizzie Bankhead. The third page is entitled "Showing what is due some of the parties & same is to be paid"; it carries over the balances still due on page two and gives an explanation of a check sent on July 16, 1879 to William S. Bankhead.
