Abstract

The collection includes a Kentucky stud book kept by Duncan Gibson for four estates belonging to the Gibson family; records for two of the estates also list slave holdings. Loose items include a copy of a letter from R.A. Alexander concerning his stallion "Lexington"; a receipt from Morgan & Eastin Hatters; notes on mares bred and foaled; and a copy of a painting of "Lexington" by Edward Troye.

Scope and Content Information

This ledger, 1860-1886, kept by Duncan Gibson of Woodford County, Kentucky, contains breeding notations for four estates, Hartland, Oakland, Magnolia, and Ridgeland, belonging to the Gibson family. Duncan Gibson and Randall Lee Gibson (1832-1892) were the sons of Tobias and Louisiana Breckinridge (Hart) Gibson. "Hartland 740 acres" (possession on May 22, 1859) consists of a "list of negroes" without age or value; stud book for 1860, colts foaled in 1860 and 1862; and, stud book thoroughbred for 1860. "Trotting stock at Oakland 1880" consists of a numbered list of trotters; remarks on the trotters; and, trotting mares bred from 1880 to 1884 followed by remarks of the mares foaled. "Thoroughbred Stock at Oakland 1880" consists of a list of nine mares and their foal and mares bred from 1880 to 1884 followed by remarks of the mares foaled. "Magnolia 2650 acres" (possession in partnership with Randall [Lee Gibson] on January 1, 1861) consists of a "list of negroes," March 7, 1860, of nine males, aged 13 to 45, with the note "from Mr. Duncan"; and, mares foaled in 1894. "1860 Ridgeland receipts" contains no information. Miscellaneous entries include a record of racing engagements from 1885 to 1886 in Lexington, Louisville, and Latonia, Kentucky; foals in the spring of 1885; table of breeding and foal dates; and, a list of fourteen given names with a figure beside each. There are also four loose items: copy of a letter, January 29, 1866, from R. A. Alexander, Woodford County, Kentucky, concerning the breeding of mares to his stallion, "Lexington"; a receipt, January 1885, from Morgan & Eastin Hatters, of Lexington, Kentucky, made out to Duncan Gibson; notes on mares bred and foaled; and, a copy of a reproduction of a painting of "Lexington", courtesy of Duncan Gibson, Ingleside, Lexington, Kentucky.
