Scope and Content Information

This letter, May 1, 1881, from Frederic James Shields (1833-1911), London, England, to Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), concerns a corrected proof of Rossetti's. Shields, a landscape artist, mural painter, and illustrator, was a contemporary and close friend of Rossetti; both men's artistic work showed Pre-Raphaelite influence. The proof mentioned in the letter probably relates to Rossetti's Ballads and Sonnets ; the copy was sent to the printer before the end of March 1881, with full publication ensuing on October 17, 1881.
