These letters were purchased by the University of Virginia Library from Timothy H. Bakken, Clarendon Hills, Illinois, on August 9, 1994.

Scope and Content Information

Both of the letters in the collection were written to John G. Kreger, Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Abingdon Male Academy. The first letter, from J.B. Bentley, Essex County, Virginia, July 11, 1870, requests information prior to his applying for admission; in the second letter, July 18, 1870, from William Johnson, Christiansville, Mecklenburg County, Virginia, Johnson applies for the position of principal at the Academy.
