Scope and Content Information

This addition to the Marion DuPont Scott Collection consists of a memoranda book, written at the request of the Game Fanciers Journal by J.A. Bentley of Shannock Mills, Rhode Island, the originator and breeder of the Tassled Muff Game Fowls, entitled "My Way of Feeding For the Pit". The volume discusses the Irish Belfast Reds raised by Bentley and advertised for sale in the Game Fanciers Journal ; the diet and physical care of fighting cocks; accommodations for the bird; medical treatment; heeling for the pit; a list of sixteen possible tricks to disable or maim another's bird before or during a fight; a list of the fifteen rules adopted by the National Game Breeding Association, Louisville, Kentucky, on December 12, 1881; diseases and their treatment; and the breeding histories of the Irish Muff, the English Tassled Madcap, and his beloved Irish Belfast Reds.
