Scope and Content Information

These six letters from Cid Corman (1924- ), a poet and translator of German and Japanese poets, 1969-1972, to Peter Hoy, were written while Corman was staying at Utano, Japan, and are generally concerned with their common interest in the French poet Francis Ponge (1899- ). Much of their correspondence discusses the appearance of Ponge's work in Origins, a small literary magazine edited by Corman in the 1950's, the reprint of all three series of Origins by the Kraus Reprint Company, and Corman's publication of a selection of his versions of Ponge's poetry in a book entitled Things . Corman also mentions the death of John Berryman (1914-1972) and quotes the dismal view of life of his friend William Bronk (1918- ), January 17, 1972. He also answers Hoy's inquiry concerning the appearance of Ponge in The Monk's Pond edited by Thomas Merton (January 17, 1972).
