Scope and Content Information
This collection includes five items, ca. 1855-1880s, containing Americana, apparently belonging to Alvin S. Dart. Included is a scrapbook, 1858-1876, of newspaper clippings of articles pertaining to subjects in the fields of literature, history, science, astronomy, religion, politics, and finance as well as poems and essays by such writers as William Cullen Bryant, Stephen Arnold Douglas, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Charles Macready, John G. Another scrapbook, post 1881, contains printed advertisement cards for such companies as Boraxine, Pillsbury, Heckers, Broadhead Dress Goods, Wise's Axle Grease, Thompson & Taylor Spice Company, Bixby's Best, and numerous tobacco companies including El Dorado, Tax Payer, and My Taste. Other items include: two letters, December 13, 1855, from George B. Mills to J. Oakley and James H. Irvine, introducing Mr. [Alvin S.] Dart of Honesdale, Pennsylvania, and requesting their assistance in procuring a position for him on line one of their Western Railroads; and, a playbill, ca. 1870, for the production of Shakespeare's Othello performed at Booth's Theatre, New York, starring Edwin Booth as Iago and Othello on alternating days.
