Acquisition Information

These items were a gift to the Library from Mr. Earl C. Leake of Charlottesville, Virginia, on March 3, 1988.

Scope and Content Information

This collection contains four items, [1890 & 1900], 1962, two black and white photographs and two electrostatic copies of newspaper articles, all pertaining to the Civil War in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The photographs show the Rio Mill Dam and a wooden covered bridge [1890] which spanned it; the latter was replaced by an iron bridge [ca. 1900]. The original was destroyed by Union General George Armstrong Custer as part of his Albemarle County raid and the Battle of Rio Hill on February 29, 1864 (fought four miles from Charlottesville). Information on the reverse of the photographs states that the dam had provided the necessary water power to "ground grain for the Confederate Army;" the bridge was rebuilt after the war. Also included is information on incidents involving local residents (Perry H. Leake and Abraham Louis and Joe Hildebran) at the structures.

The newspaper articles are from a supplement to the April 13, 1962 issue of the Daily Progress published as part of Charlottesville's 200th anniversary observances (1762-1962). Those present in the collection are concerned with the Rio Hill battle, the surrender of the town on March 3, 1865, and its role as a Confederate Army hospital during the war.
