Acquisition Information

This collection was a gift to the Library by Dr. Nan Cooke Carpenter of Athens, Georgia, on April 18, 1988.

Scope and Content Information

This collection consists of 132 items, 1979(1985-1987)1988, chiefly letters to Nan Cooke Carpenter in response to her gifts of books by her sister, Margaret Haley Carpenter, Anthology of Magazine Verse, Sara Teasdale: A Biography, A Gift for the Princess of Springtime, and Imminent Harvest, and by herself, A Quiver of Quizzes for Quidnuncs.

Correspondents include relatives, friends, and authors such as Jean Burden, William A. Drake, Frances J. Flick, Fannie Goffigan, George Cardinal Legros, Olive Messer Lewis, Sarah Lockwood, Virginia Moseley, Robert Manson Myers, John Nixon, Jr., Peggy Lockwood Nolting, Eleanor Ruggles O'Leary, Frank and Elizabeth Preston, Ruby Altizer Roberts, Glenn Ruihley, Martha Turnbull, and Dorothy Van Doren. There are many expressions of sympathy and sadness over the death of "Sweet" (Margaret's family name) in May of 1985, as well as fond and affectionate remembrances. Her book of poetry, Imminent Harvest, printed posthumously, was well received by her many relatives and friends, as evidenced in letters from Burden, Drake, O'Leary, and Ruihley, among others. There was also an effort to establish a Margaret Haley Carpenter Prize in Poetry through the Westhampton College Alumnae Association of the University of Richmond, and many persons revealed their interest by making contributions.

Arrangement

The letters have been separated into two date ranges, 1979(1985-1986) and 1987-1988, with the letters within the folders arranged alphabetically by correspondents.
