This letter was purchased by the Library from John Wilson of Oxford, England on April 29, 1996.

Scope and Content Information

This is a letter, November 29, 1875, from Alfred Lord Tennyson, Freshwater, Isle of Wight, England, to Sophy [Cracroft], Lady Franklin's niece and executrix, keeping her abreast of the many translations of the epitaph of Sir John Franklin and thanking her for the offer of an alabaster bust. The memorial to Sir John Franklin in Westminster Abbey was unveiled a fortnight after the death of Lady Franklin. Tennyson, who was related to the Franklins by marriage, composed the epitaph. Translations into Greek, Latin, and Persian were provided by various persons.
