Scope and Content Information

This addition to the Warren Chappell Collection consists of eight items, 1931, 1939, 1971, and undated, found in the Rare Books Warren Chappell Book Collection and transferred to the Manuscripts Division. These include four mock-ups of books illustrated by Warren Chappell and containing his original artwork: Story Book ; Morley's Illustrated Volume: 3 Tales of the East ; The Yarn of the Nancy Bell ; and an incomplete and untitled alphabet book for children written and illustrated by Chappell; and a mock-up of a fold-out peep show for "The World of Tomorrow, New York World's Fair."

Also present is a notebook concerning book binding kept by Lydia Chappell (formerly in a small three ring binder); a letter, May 12, 1931, from Lydia Chappell, Germany, to Nancy Buxton, Newport News, Virginia, about life in Germany where she was studying book binding and weaving and embroidering for tapestries. She writes, "Germany is a startingly beautiful country. It is so green, so clean, so utterly different from America that I shall not attempt to describe it to you."; and a short letter, May 12, 1971, from John [?], New York, to Warren Chappell, "This shows Bert Clarke now in action at A. Colish, hampered somewhat, I suppose, by my text and specifications. The too heavy List of the Books on page 6 is my fault. The book also provides a general view of my work. If you have time to read straight through, the poems may be found to reinforce one another."
