Scope and Content Information

This addition to the papers of Warren Chappell consists of 85 items, 1967-1990, all concerning his correspondence with the editors and artwork for publications of The University Press of Virginia. These papers include correspondence, notes, sketches, color separations, book jackets, an Heritage of the Graphic Arts Lecture entitled "Some Words About the Alphabet" by Warren Chappell (1976), the booklet "Let's Make a B for Bennett" by Chappell, a photograph of Chappell, and book layouts and paste-ups.

Among the publications of the University Press of Virginia represented are: The Commedia Dell'Arte in Paris 1644-1697 by Virginia Scott; A Midsummers Night's Dream ; New Essays by Henry Fielding: His Contributions to the Craftsman, 1734-1739 compiled by Martin C. Battestin; Ordeal of the Union by Allan Nevins; Pope's Dunciad of 1728: A History and Facsimile by David Vander Meulen; The Providence of Wit by Martin C. Battestin; and Stories for Lesley by Robert Frost.

Also present in the collection in the correspondence folder are eleven letters between Warren Chappell and Walker Cowen, Gwynne Stallings, and a copy of a letter from Harry Ford (Atheneum Publishers). Topics in these letters include: The Living Alphabet (1972 Nov 12; 1975 Jun 5, Nov 6); Randolph Jefferson's twin sister, Ann Scott (attached to 1974 Nov 6); Chappell's efforts to get the Book- of-the-Month-Club to select Jefferson Himself by Bernard Mayo for one of its paperback choices in the bicentennial year (1974 Nov 6); freedom of the press (n.y. Oct 31); and Harry Ford's explanation of the merger of Athenaeum Publishers with Scribner's and subsequent purchase by Macmillan (1987 Apr 13).
