Biographical/Historical Information

Scope and Content Information
This collection consists of ca. 830 items (2 Hollinger boxes, ca. 1 linear foot), 1952-1981, records of the Charlottesville Branch of the English-Speaking Union of the United States. The collection includes correspondence, minutes of annual and boards of director meetings, treasurer's reports, membership and officer rosters, by-laws, memoranda, and newspaper clippings and photographs pertaining to the activities of the branch. The majority of the records deal with the administration fo the branch, such as election of officers, finances and various dinners, movies and lectures on English-related topics for annual meetings. The correspondence is also concerned with several programs sponsored by the branch such as the Lily Dabney Summer School Scholarships for local high school teachers or graduate students to study in Great Britain for the summer, and a book exchange program with schools in that country. There are papers regarding the local branch's participation in student exchange programs by offering hospitality to British students touring the United States during summers.
