Biographical/Historical Information
Donald Edwin Nuechterlein received his degrees in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Michigan (B.A. 1948, M.A. 1949, and Ph.D. 1959); and, he served in the United States Navy, 1943-1946, and the United States Naval Reserve, 1948-1968. His distinguished career includes positions with prestigious agencies and universities: Department of State, Washington, D. C., 1952-1954; United States Information Agency, 1955-1963, in Reykjavik, Iceland, Washington, D. C., and Bangkok, Thailand; Department of Defense, Washington, D. C., 1964-1968; Federal Executive Institute, United States Office of Personnel Management, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1968-1988; Queen's University School of Business, Ontario, Canada, 1989, 1990, 1992, and 1993; and, the University of Kaiserslautern Business Administration Division, Germany, spring sessions 1991, 1993, 1994, and 1995. He also lectured at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business Administration during 1994 and 1995; and, in November 1995 made a presentation on Canada's constitutional crisis at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia. Nuechterlein has also received several awards: Rockefeller Scholar, University of California, 1963-1964; Fulbright Lecturer, University College of Wales, 1976; Research Fellow, St. Antony's College, Oxford, 1982; and, Research Fellow, Australian National University, 1990. He has written seven books on American foreign policy and has contributed political commentaries to Virginia newspapers since 1980. Nuechterlein and his wife, Mildred, have four children.
Scope and Content Information
This collection of 64 items, 1983-1988 and 1992-1996,
consists chiefly of newspaper columns written by Don
Nuechterlein, along with letters to the editor, contributed
primarily to
The Roanoke Times &
World-News Dispatch and the
Richmond Times-Dispatch as well
as the
Daily Progress , the
Washington Post , and the
Saginaw News . Included are
columns on President Bill Clinton decisions, world affairs,
and American foreign policy, including conflicts in Bosnia,
Somalia, and Iraq; the Canadian national vote and the
Canada-Quebec issue; the North American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA) among Canada, Mexico, and the United States; the
economic cold war with Japan and China; European leadership;
Germany-United States relations; and the military occupation
in Haiti.
There are also writings by Nuechterlein: an article, "U. S. National Interests and National Strategy: Are there parallels with U. S. International Corporate Interests?"; excerpts, "National Interests and National Strategy: The Need for Priority" reprinted from Understanding U. S. Strategy: A Reader ; an article, "The United States Should Reorder its Priorities in East Asia," in Naval War College Review , Autumn 1987; and, an article on the Federal Executive Institute, "FEI at Twenty: a Personal Retrospect," in The Bureaucrat , Spring 1988.
Correspondence chiefly concerns articles written by
Nuechterlein for Virginia newspapers. Correspondents include
newspaper personnel of the
Richmond Times-Dispatch --
Edward Grimsley, Ross Mackenzie, and Ann Lloyd Merriman;
educators--John Staige Davis, IV of the University of Virginia
Health Sciences Center; Kenneth R. Garren, Vice President and
Dean of Roanoke College; Martin (J. Havran) of the University
of Virginia Corcoran Department of History; Paul M. Kattenburg
of the University of South Carolina Institute of International
Studies; and, Victor Jaake of Charlottesville, Virginia. A
December 6, 1995 letter from Merriman includes an article by
Nuechterlein, "Realities Cloud Clinton's Decision to Police
the Balkans." There are also three letters from Nuechterlein,
including a December 1995 Christmas letter relating news of
the Nuechterlein family during the year and a January 12, 1996
letter to Ann L. S. Southwell of the Special Collections
Department mentioning recent lectures and enclosing a summary
of biographical information.
