Scope and Content Information
There is a handwritten quotation from "Apartment in Athens." Wescott comments on book collecting methods; calls "Apartment in Athens" his best novel but "The pilgrim hawk: a love story" is 'perfect'; recommends "Noon wine" by Katherine Anne Porter and the writing of Richard Hughes; tries to obtain for Miss Porter an invitation to a party in honor of [Robert] Frost; sends a New Year's Greeting; and calls the [University of Virginia?] Library "thrilling."
Correspondents include Mr. Halter, Mr. Edwards, and Clifton Waller Barrett.
Contents List
"I will tell you how it is when one contemplates dying . . . "
Comments on Mr. Halter's methods of book collecting. Believes Apartment in Athens (1945) is his best novel but The Pilgrim Hawk: A Love Story (1940) may be called "perfect." Its publication ended years of silence and intense writing. Suggests he collect Noon Wine by Katherine Anne Porter and the writing of Richard Hughes. Mentions eighteenth century opera.
Thanks C. W. B. for invitation to a birthday party in Washington, D. C. Encloses a letter, sent to Mr. Edwards, requesting an invitation for Katherine Anne [Porter] to the same party.
Asks him to invite Katherine Anne Porter to a birthday and book party for Frost. Porter is to be novelist of the year. Mentions Book-of-the-Month Club.
New Year's Greeting. Says visit to (University of Virginia ? ) Library in Charlottesville "thrilling" (*probably referring to the Clifton Waller Barretts)
