Scope and Content Information
In two letters to John Williamson Palmer, Underwood reiterates a request by James Russell Lowell that Palmer write a series for the Atlantic Monthly; describes the background, writing, and employment needs of Elizabeth Ann (Chase) Akers Allen; asks for biographical information on Palmer and suggestions of passages from his work for anthologizing in his planned handbook of American authors (The builders of American literature).
In the third letter, Underwood asks William Adolphus Wheeler to send books by Richard Henry Dana, Sr. and Charles Sprague's "Poems and orations" (probably Writings of Charles Sprague, Now First Collected ).

Reiterate James Russell Lowell's request to have John Williamson Palmer write a series for the Atlantic Monthly . He also describes the employment needs of Elizabeth Ann (Chase) Akers Allen, explaining her other names: "Florence Percy" and subjects mentioned include: Allen's poems, "Bringing Our Sheaves With Us" and "Left Behind," her husband's desertion to California, and their divorce; Portland Transcript ; undiscolosed business affairs of a man named "W;" Mr. Nichols (a printer?); Bulls and Bears ; and Portland, Maine.
Asks Willam Adophus Wheeler to send him some books, via Underwood's daughter, by Richard Henry Dana, Sr. and Charles Sprague's "Poems and Orations" Writings of Charles Spragues, Now Fist Collected ). Also asks if Wheeler has found a poem by John Pierpont ( Airs of Palestine ?) and if Alexander Hill Everett wrote anyting of quality.
Asks Palmer to send biographical information and to suggest passages of his work for anthologizing in his planned handbook of American authors (i.e. The Builders of American Literature ). Subjects mentioned inlucde Palmer's Asiatic writing, Atlantic Monthly , and A Hand-Book of English Literature . The verso contains biographical notes re Palmer in an unidentified hand.
