Contents List

Letter from Zona Gale, Portage, Wisconsin, to Clifford Smythe 1921 Aug 16
ALS, 3p.

Expresses her deep appreciation for Smythe's review of her play in The New York Times Saturday Book Review, "it was not only the charm of what you said - noting the particular things I longed to have noted, finding the bits I wanted to have found. But it was of course that this high word came from you - and also because of this came in a way from The Times , which had best seen what I was driving at."

Letter from Zona Gale to Clifford Smythe 1922 Nov 15
TLS, 1p.

Informs Smythe that she has mailed her little review to him in care of The New York Times Saturday Book Review and congratulates him on the new magazine.

Writes she will be delighted to review Raw Material by Dorothy Canfield Fisher (1879-1958), which she likes enormously, in The International Book Review ; mentions that Macmillan is bringing out a new edition of her book Birth , "the longest and to me the least unsatisfactory book I have done"; Mr. Pemberton plans to produce two plays of hers, one based on Birth ; and asks him to destroy a twelve year photograph of her used with a review.
