Acquisition Information

This collection was a gift to the Library from Mrs. Peter Ritzel of Springfield, Virginia, through Mrs. Thomas Campbell of Charlottesville, Virginia, on November 7, 1986.

Scope and Content Information

Included is genealogical data on the descendants of Captain Hercules Courtenay, the family of Edward Henry (November 19, 1803-December 21, 1853) and Harriet Whitehorne (Rathbone) Courtenay (July 1, 1802- November 11, 1844), and the family of Benjamin and Mary (Malbone) Rathbone. Other material includes: biographical information on Edward Henry Courtenay (1803-1853); an obituary of Edward Henry Courtenay (April 11, 1842-June 3, 1902); documents re: the marriage of Edward Henry Courtenay and Margaret B. Barnes on October 22, 1922; papers re: the estate of David Stewart Courtenay, Jr. (May 24, 1850-1874); and a manuscript entitled "History of the House of Courtenay."
