This material was given to the Library on September 20, 1995, by Mr. M.F. Underhill of the Leschetizky Association--Richmond Chapter, Richmond, Virginia.
Scope and Content Information
The correspondence includes a sympathy acknowledgement, [1960], from John Powell; a letter, October 6, 1961, from Charles Wendt to John Powell, asking for a reference for his Fulbright application and expressing his plans while in Europe, with the autograph draft of the reply on verso by Powell; and, a letter, November 10, 1970, from Leigh Williams (granddaughter of Rebecca Leigh Powell, John Powell's mother) to Mrs. John H. Landrum, enclosing a copy of the will, August 5, 1899, of Rebecca Leigh Powell. There are newspaper clippings and printed material, 1928-1978, about John Powell and Louise Burleigh Powell, including articles from Richmond, Virginia, 1927, and The Virginia Musician, 1938. There are programs, 1919-1964, of concerts by Powell including ones from Cabell Hall, University of Virginia for December 2, 1938 and for The Virginia Composers Festival Concert 1959-1960 season and the National Symphony 1963-1964 season. There are photographs, chiefly n.d., of John Powell and Louise Burleigh Powell, at various ages, and "Longways," the Powell home, as well as several related pictures.
