Scope and Content Information
This collection consists of correspondence and papers pertaining to James Branch Cabell and his literary work, ca. 68 items, 1912-1984, including letters from James Branch Cabell, 1912-1943, to Ben Abramson, the Argus Bookshop (discussing errors in Mr. Pape's map of Poictesme 1928 July 17), J.C. Beale, Colonel Lawrence B. Bixby, Mr. Branch, Mr. Brown, Mr. Colman, Mr. Donnelly, Mr. Emmons, Felix Hargrett, Samuel Loveman, Dr. Shanks, Charles W. Stage, Jr., Mrs. Harry E. Vernon, and Mr. Wells, thanking them for their interest in his work.
Other files of correspondence include letters between Cabell collector, John Thomas Head, and James Branch Cabell (1954-1955); correspondence of the Argus Book Shop with Frank C. Pape and Charles W. Stage, Jr. about James Branch Cabell (1930-1931); and letters to Scott Cunningham from James Branch Cabell, Burton Rascoe, and Carl Van Doren (with photograph) concerning Jurgen (1924).
Additional material includes the correspondence of John Thomas Head and dealer, Nelson Bond, about purchasing Cabell items, including the entire "Barber file" consisting of an article about James Branch Cabell by Maud Barber which appeared in The Book Scorpion, printed by Marion E. Dodd, proprietor of The Hampshire Bookshop, Inc., a letter from Cabell to Barber about the article, and correspondence between Barber and Dodd about Cabell and the article, all in 1922.
Other material includes: a five-page typed manuscript of Cabell's "The Delta of Radegonde," heavily annotated and corrected by hand (1921 Mar); an invitation to the dedication of the James Branch Cabell Library at the Virginia Commonwealth University (1976); printed Cabell advertisements, book reviews, obituaries, a Gotham Book Mart Cabell price list, and news clippings, all about James Branch Cabell.
