Scope and Content Information

There is correspondence, 1956-1960, between William Faulkner and Floyd Stovall, Chairman of the Department of English, concerning Faulkner's position as writer-in-residence at the University and his appointment as the Balch Lecturer in American Literature. There is also correspondence, 1960, between Faulkner and Weldon Cooper, Secretary to the Board of Visitors, concerning Faulkner's appointment as the Balch Lecturer. Correspondence, July - October 1960, of Floyd Stovall concerning Faulkner's appointment as the Balch Lecturer contains correspondence with Edgar F. Shannon, Jr., President of the University and William L. Duren, Jr., Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. There are correspondence and papers, 1960-1962, of Joseph L. Blotner, Department of English, concerning public readings by Faulkner. Other correspondence of Blotner concerns specific readings by Faulkner on May 26, 1961 and on May 17, 1962. Correspondents include: William H. Runge, Curator of Rare Books; Weldon Cooper, Secretary to the Board of Visitors; Edgar F. Shannon, Jr., President ; Thomas H. Blanton, Senator; Paul Saunier, Jr., assistant to the President ; Woodrow W. Wilkerson, Superintendent of Public Education; and, numerous professors and deans of Virginia colleges and universities. Also included is correspondence, 1960-1963, which contains a memorial written by Joseph L. Blotner in December 1962; a letter, October 1, 1962, from Edgar F. Shannon, Jr. to Murray L. Goldsborough concerning the possible commission of Goldsborough to paint a portrait of William Faulkner for Faulkner's daughter, Jill Summers, and for the University of Virginia; and, a letter, November 4, 1963, from Fredson Bowers, Chairman of the Department of English, to John Cook Wyllie, University Library, concerning some Faulkner letters.
