Scope and Content Information
This collection contains material regarding James Branch Cabell compiled by Emmett B. Peter, Jr. for use in his projected book about Cabell. Included are six typed transcripts (carbon copies) of Cabell's essays published between 1895 and 1898 in The William and Mary College Monthly under his pseudonym Charles Antrim Balance: "Pastels" (December 1895), "Christopher Marlowe--Poet and Dramatist" (December 1896), "In Defence of an Obsolete Author" (November 1897), "On Telling the Truth" (December 1897), "Black Spirits and White" (February 1898), and "La Thebaide of Racine" (March 1898). In addition, there are a two-page bibliography of Cabell's contributions to WMCM and a note, June 4, 1961, from Peter concerning restrictions on the material prior to the publication of his book.
