Scope and Content Information
In this collection of letters and postcards, Una Jeffers answers the request of Cortlandt Schoonover to buy smaller publications for his collection, mentioning several, noting that most were done without their knowledge, and sending and commenting on available ones, particularly An Artist.
In addition she sends a postcard of a view near their County Donegal farmhouse. Another note is on a postcard of Mission San Carlos Borromeo. Frederic Prokosch, Lincoln Steffens and the Grabhorn Press are also briefly mentioned. Finally, a cancelled check from Schoonover to Jeffers is included.
Contents List
Answers his letter requesting some of the smaller Jeffers items that are difficult to procure, "First let me say that we are both of us much opposed to small items. Each one of them has been forced out of us or come by surprise. (For instance the Rock & Hawk was done by Frederic Prokosch before we ever heard of him for his own writing, he printed the poem from its first appearance in Scribner 's I believe, on his little hand press & sent us all the copies but two I think for a surprise) and so on....But we believe that it puts an unfair burden on the average reader & enthusiast to have so many little items to pursue"; also offers to give him a copy of Stars and an article on [George] Sterling; mentions a soiled copy of An Artist , which was edited by Ella Winter and Lincoln Steffens (1866-1936) for a special Carmelite issue devoted to Robinson Jeffers in 1928, for sale by a friend; and mentions the possibility that in six months a photographer [H. Lyon] might publish, Jeffers Country , a book of West Coast photographs using captions based on Jeffers' own poems.
Sends under separate cover a copy of An Artist and other items; promises to send "Return" published 1934 by Lilienthal and printed by The Grabhorn Press, and "Hope is not for the Wise" printed in 1937 by Lilienthal and his wife on their little hand press; and includes a note about the copy of An Artist sold to Schoonover, "This copy of "An Artist" was loaned by U.J. to Ella Winter & Lincoln Steffens when they edited the special Jeffers number of "The Carmelite" in 1928. The scribbled words on back are Ella W's writing. It got soiled in the press room - they were using it particularly for the bibliography."
She writes on the message side of a postcard scene of Muckish Mountain in Donegal County, Ireland, "Within a mile of our farmhouse in Donegal. Warm thanks for your charming gift! U.J."
Informs Schoonover that she has noted his order for a copy of the trade edition of Selected Poems and does not believe there will be a special edition.
Notifies Schoonover that his autographed copy of Selected Poems has been mailed with its costs.
She writes on the message side of a postcard scene of the Mission San Carlos, Carmel, California, founded in 1771 and the burial site of Father Serra, concerning "Pamphlet = "Writers Take Sides" Letters about war in Spain from 418 American writers Pub. by League of American Writers.... The picture on jacket of Selected Poem s is by H. Lyon who hopes to publish The Jeffers Country pictures I spoke of."
